fjaka (2023)

Participative performance, performance, self-portraits, digitalised colour negatives and silver gelatin prints

Fjaka, a Dalmatian slang term akin to the Italian "dolce far niente", refers to the joy of doing nothing and achieving a dreamlike state of ease. Described by the poet Jakša Fiamengo as a "lethargic stupor" and "general passivity," it represents a loss of time and an embrace of stillness. Seen as a response to an overworked society, fjaka here advocates for rest and inactivity as acts of resistance against capitalist workaholism. The fjaka project, through self-portraits and performances, critiques productivity's centrality to identity and celebrates laziness as vital for a fulfilling, sustainable life.
